Photographing with Kolorshift
Is Kolorshift already available on iPhone and Android?
Kolorshift is in private beta and being prepared for iPhone and Android. The website presents the project and lets you explore looks on reference photographs; it does not yet offer a public download.
Kolorshift is designed for iPhone with iOS 15 or later, and Android 10 or later. Available lenses, resolution and RAW capture depend on the capabilities exposed by your device. Importing a compatible RAW and capturing one are separate features.
Can I take photos with film looks in real time?
Yes. Kolorshift is a camera application as well as an editor. Choose one of the 60 active looks: its colours and contrast are visible live in the viewfinder while you frame, before taking the photo. Four films are free; applying the others requires Pro.
Grain and other advanced Lens FX are adjusted after capture. This keeps the viewfinder focused on photography, then gives you time to shape every effect in the editor. The preview and the full-resolution copy’s finishing are separate steps.
Which lenses and resolutions can I use?
Front and rear lenses are those the system makes accessible to Kolorshift. Availability, flash and exposure range depend on the phone and active lens.
The new interface separates Fast, Maximum resolution, Night and HDR, according to the capabilities reported by the lens. Maximum resolution does not automatically enable Night. The iOS module does not offer Night mode. These updates are being prepared for the betas; they guarantee neither 48 megapixels nor all features of the manufacturer’s camera application.
What is the difference between viewfinder exposure and editing exposure?
In the viewfinder, exposure compensation controls the native camera when it exposes this function. It helps you prepare the shot, with a range that depends on the active lens.
In the editor, exposure changes an image that has already been recorded. It can rebalance the light but cannot recover information permanently lost when shooting. The two controls therefore act at different stages.
Are grain and optical effects visible while shooting?
The film look is visible in the viewfinder. Advanced Lens FX, including grain, bloom, halation and peripheral blur, are adjusted after shooting.
This keeps a camera dedicated to framing, then an editing space for shaping each effect. Compare effects, reset them individually or reset the edit while keeping the selected film.
Can I work on a photo I have already taken?
Yes. Import a JPEG, PNG or compatible RAW, even taken with another camera. Choose a film, compare looks on the same image and continue with light, colour and Lens FX controls.
A lightly graded or ungraded image is a good starting point for comparing films. If your photograph already has a strong look, adding another interpretation can increase contrast or shift its colours further. Your original stays preserved.
Which languages will Kolorshift support?
The main workflows are available in French, English, German, Italian, Spanish and Korean. This covers the main screens and actions of the Kolorshift experience.
Coverage of all text is still being checked during beta. This list does not promise a full translation of every document, reference sheet or system message in all these languages.
Do I need an Internet connection to process my photos?
The application’s photographic processing runs on the phone. It does not require sending your image to a remote service to calculate a film look or effect.
Some exchanges are separate from photo processing: installation and updates, access to stores or verification of Pro rights. On this website, a connection is needed to load demonstration photographs and profiles.
Choose a film
Which films are included in the free offer?
The four free looks are Kodak Gold 200, Kodak Ektachrome E100, Fujifilm Provia 100F and Kodak VISION3 500T. They let you explore different film families and start photographing with a look chosen in the viewfinder.
The other active looks are marked Pro. The catalogue’s two independent interpretations are documented with their limitations.
Do the looks reproduce real film exactly?
Kolorshift offers documented emulations and creative approximations of film character. Sources vary by reference: manufacturer data, independent sources or photographed graphs. The catalogue is not presented as a set of certified spectral measurements.
A digital photograph, its exposure and settings also influence the result. There is no promise of an identical match to a physical emulsion, scan or particular software. The named brands identify the original films; they do not validate these looks.
Are all 46 looks based on the same kind of data?
All 46 references now have an active look. For 44 of them, models draw on published data: manufacturer curves, independent measurements or photographed colour charts, with limitations specific to each source.
CineStill 50D and Polaroid Color SX-70 use two independent Kolorshift interpretations. Their parameters are chosen and are not calibrated against physical emulsions; manufacturer pages document film identity, speed and process. Neither substitutes another film’s profile.
Does the film ISO change my phone’s ISO?
No. The ISO belongs to the original film reference. It helps describe the film in the catalogue, alongside its process and family.
Choosing Gold 200 or Portra 800 does not automatically set the sensor to ISO 200 or 800. The camera retains its own capture settings and the capabilities exposed by the phone.
Which photo should I use to discover a film?
A well-exposed photograph with moderate contrast and no strong existing creative look helps reveal a film’s character. Try varied scenes: skin, architecture, greenery or evening light.
If a JPEG already has strong grading, the new look builds on that interpretation. This can intensify colour and density. In the website preview, controls below the photo affect only the edited side; the reference stays unchanged.
Develop and preserve precision
Are importing RAW and capturing RAW the same thing?
These are two separate possibilities. Importing RAW means opening an existing file if its format and compression are recognised by the decoders used on your phone. It does not require the phone to be able to capture that RAW format itself.
Capture depends on a native mode that is actually supported: Apple ProRAW on compatible iPhones or RAW_SENSOR on some Android configurations. Kolorshift does not make a non-Pro iPhone compatible with ProRAW.
About Apple ProRAWWhat is 16-bit processing for?
For supported RAW files, the working master retains 16 bits per channel in linear ProPhoto RGB. Editing calculations use 32-bit floating point. This workflow keeps working precision separate from the small JPEG used to display a quick preview.
A 16-bit RGB TIFF with an ICC profile retains a developed image at high precision. A final JPEG is suited to sharing. Processing precision does not add details missing or permanently clipped in the source.
What is the difference between the RAW original, a TIFF and a JPEG?
The RAW original contains the sensor’s starting data. TIFF is a developed image: it can retain 16 bits per channel and a colour profile, but it does not become a new RAW. JPEG is a lighter copy suited to sharing.
Kolorshift distinguishes these files. The original can be kept or exported separately; the edited copy expresses your film and adjustment choices. Saving a copy does not replace the original RAW.
Are all RAW files supported?
Support varies with the camera, format, compression and decoders available on the phone. Two files with the same extension may therefore offer different development possibilities.
Current limits are 50 megapixels and 150 MB, with an additional constraint from device memory and graphics capabilities. RAW controls appear when a raw file is recognised. A JPEG or TIFF is not artificially given that status.
Can RAW tools recover every highlight?
They work with information still present in the file and retained during development. An area that looks white in a preview may still have some latitude in the RAW; an area genuinely saturated in the data cannot be reconstructed identically.
Recovery, exposure, whites and shadows have complementary roles. A strong correction can also make noise more visible. The result depends on the capture and source file.
Your images and your data
What happens to my original photo when I edit it?
Adjustments do not replace your original. Film, exposure, cropping and effects prepare a copy of your image. Compare it with the source and continue adjusting before keeping the result.
My photos brings together the application’s shots and edits. Deliberate file deletion remains a separate action requiring confirmation; it should not be confused with resetting editing controls.
How do my images get into Photos or Google Photos?
With your permission, a rendered copy can be added to the phone’s system photo library. The application also keeps its own shots and edits in My photos. These locations serve different purposes.
Deleting a file from the Kolorshift gallery does not remove a copy already in Photos or Google Photos. iCloud and Google Photos backups follow your personal settings; Kolorshift does not enable or disable them for you.
Are my photos sent to a server?
Photographs and their processing stay on the phone. Kolorshift does not send them to a server to apply a film look or effect. Advertising and photographic telemetry are not part of its current operation.
The information required for purchases and Pro access verification passes separately through the stores and RevenueCat, including purchase data and an anonymous identifier. This does not include your photos. Photo-library backups depend on your own cloud settings.
Why does the application request camera or photo access?
Camera access lets you photograph in Kolorshift. Photo-library access lets you choose an existing image or save a copy, subject to system permissions.
These requests appear when a feature needs them. You can change your choices later in your phone settings. Refusing permission limits the relevant feature; it does not allow Kolorshift to bypass your choice.
What happens when I delete a photo in Kolorshift?
Deletion concerns files kept in the application’s gallery and requires confirmation. It does not automatically remove copies already saved to Photos, Google Photos or another location.
Before deleting a shot or the entire gallery, check your copies and backups. iCloud and Google Photos backups follow those services’ settings and your phone settings.
What does this website remember, and can I upload my own photo?
The website preview uses demonstration photographs supplied with the project. It does not offer personal photo uploads. The controls let you explore the look in your browser.
Your language choice can be stored on your device for the next visit. Clear this preference by deleting the website’s data in your browser. The Privacy page explains this storage and distinguishes the website from the application.
Offers and launch
Should I choose a subscription or lifetime access?
The planned offer gives two alternative ways to access Pro: €4.99 per month or €50 for lifetime access. Choose the option that suits you; they are not intended to be combined. Four films remain free to start with.
The free offer includes four films, Basic editing and accessibility features. Pro adds the full library, Lens FX and Pro feature updates. Both plans provide the same features. Final, localised prices will be confirmed in stores. Purchases are not open yet, and shared iPhone/Android access has not been announced.
Can I preview Pro films before choosing an offer?
On this website, the interactive preview lets you compare all 60 active looks on the available scenes. Switch films and adjust the rendered side to explore differences without changing the displayed original photo.
In the application, browsing and some previews may be available before a Pro film is unlocked. Applying and exporting it still require the relevant access. The website demo does not mean that every look will be free to export in the application.
How do I restore Pro access I already purchased?
The application includes a purchase-restoration control. It checks rights associated with the store account in use, within the applicable product and store rules.
Production purchases are not open in the beta presented here. Restoration, products and displayed information must match the offers actually published in the relevant store.
Where can I manage a subscription or request a refund?
For a store purchase, subscription management follows Apple’s or Google’s tools and conditions. A monthly subscription and lifetime access are different choices: lifetime access is not an accumulated monthly fee.
Final conditions, localised prices and refund arrangements will be those shown before purchase in the relevant store, subject to applicable rights. This website does not process payments.
Will an iPhone purchase also unlock Android?
Shared access between the two platforms has not been announced. The stores and their purchase accounts remain separate environments.
Do not choose an offer assuming automatic transfer between iPhone and Android. Final restoration and sharing possibilities will be explained with the offers actually sold.
What can still change during beta?
The private beta is used to assess capture, editing, formats and effects on different phones. Some controls depend on the cameras and features actually exposed by each device.
Looks, interfaces and controls may still be refined. Visual quality, latency, heat and battery life must be assessed in real use; computer checks do not replace testing on a phone.
When can I download Kolorshift?
No public release date has been announced yet. Kolorshift is in private beta; App Store and Google Play links will be shared once availability is confirmed.
Meanwhile, explore the application’s workflow, browse the catalogue and compare looks in the website’s interactive preview. There is currently no waiting-list form or public download link here.
